Encaustics with Photo Transfers

Encaustics with Photo Transfers

Encaustics is a popular class that we have offered many times but yesterday was the first time that we did photo transfer directly into the encaustic collage and boy was it fun! Margaret Hluch taught this class which is a form of collage that uses hot wax to create layers of depth.  We began the class by preparing our surface with the initial layers of wax.

While waiting for the surface to cool, we chose images and collage materials to create a pleasing and balanced composition.

Next we learned the photo transfer technique and applied our image to the wax surface.  This technique has many variables which often results in an imperfect but interesting transfer.

After the image was transferred, we finished our composition and did the final touches.  Here are the results!
